Personal Research Project (5.1 microphone)

Is there an audible difference in using a dedicated 5.1 microphone array? This is the title question of my research project that I’m currently working on, yesterday I came across a product that seems to be working its way in as an industry standard. The product is an on location microphone unit that has six microphones built in to record surround sound quickly and inexpensively with professional results. The Holophone H2-Pro is based on the human head with small microphones placed strategically to capture a surround sound image. Recently Yahoo Music have used the product to capture a live performance in 5.1 surround. I was also reading an article written by a music technology lecturer, he claimed the H2-Pro’s results were far beyond his expectations and it works great along side other microphones placed in positions to capture specific detail.
