Artifact 1

During artifact 1 the main objective was to research audible differences between two recordings of an acoustic piano, the first recording would only use two microphones (stereo) the second would use five (surround sound). I set up five microphone around the piano and routed each microphone to the corresponding speaker channel, for example the the microphone that was directly centered to the piano was routed to the centre speaker, the microphone that was positioned close to the right of the piano would be sent to the front right speaker.

The research method used for all my arifacts will be a listening test, for this particular test the stereo recording had been enhanced with reverb in the rear speakers to emulate a true surround image. The listeners will evaluate both recording without knowing if they are hearing a true surround recording or a stereo recording with added reverb to the rear channels.

Knowledge and experience gained during Artifact 1;
-Use of surround sound microphone techniques researched during written project.
- Use of reverb in a surround environment.
- Bouncing 6 files out of Pro Tools instead of the usual stereo WAV file.
- Using the Apple Compressor program to convert the 6 files into an AC3 file for use on DVD.
