PRP written document findings

After completing my written document I thought it would be good practice to bullet point some interesting topics i came across during the research process. Everything listed below is something i knew nothing or very little about before starting the project;

- There are no industry standard techniques when recording and mixing surround audio.
- Audio engineers are debating the purpose of the centre channel when mixing music in 5.1, is it actually needed?
- 5.1 radio stations are beginning to appear in the classical music genre.
- The are two separate mix's of a soundtrack in film industry, one is used in the cinema and the other exclusively for DVD.
- The centre channel can reduce the stereo image of the front left and right channels when listening to music in surround.
- Dolby Digital EX enables the engineer to add a centre surround channel into the mix
- Professional audio engineers want more channels to place sound above and below the audience.
- Anything mastered in surround has to be compatible with both mono and stereo formats.

These are just a few factors I thought I would share, the surround medium is moving on very rapidly as the use of 5.1 home theatre grows. I listen to the Dolby podcast by-weekly, its a great way to hear how the industry is progressing.
